When
a decades-old Russian communications satellite begins to fail,
only the original American designer of its guidance system
can fix the problem. Eventually, it transpires that the satellite
has a more sinister purpose.
Clint
Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner
(not to mention James Cromwell). What a cast! If nothing else,
Space Cowboys features an impressive clutch of the most mature
stars presently on the Hollywood scene. Yes, it really is
geriatrics in space, but with cast like this, you know you
are going to be in for a treat. Okay, this is not a blockbuster
movie full of endless action, bangs and flashes, but there
is never a dull moment. The pace is measured, yes, but the
story holds together, there is an effective level of tension
and as a piece of drama the film cannot be faulted. To maintain
credibility, the stars go in for plenty of self-deprecating
humour, and there is some amusing sparring with the younger
support actors. One thing is certain, Eastwood and his creaky
co-stars can still cut it on the silver screen (or your TV),
and special credit to Tommy Lee Jones for some genuinely touching
moments.
Once
into space, the story really picks up in pace, and there are
some excellent special effects, most notably during the spacewalk
sequences.
A fun, at times touching, but always highly enjoyable movie.
