The latest addition to Hideo Kojima's legendary
Metal Gear Solid series jumps into the stealth action genre on the PSP system with an original storyline that follows the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It also incorporates online play that lets gamers recruit their own comrades to form a unique fighting force. Providing the missing pieces to the puzzle of the Metal Gear saga, players learn more about their favourite characters and how the events of later Metal Gear games were set into motion while experiencing breakthrough online play that lets gamers use all aspects of the PSP systems' infrastructure functionality...

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is the latest instalment in Hideo Kojima's legendary Metal Gear Solid series. The game features a full stealth-action single player story mode and key wireless features allowing players to recruit and play as a unique squadron of battle-hardened mercenaries.

Set in 1970, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops follows directly on from the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, with the player assuming the role of series hero Snake (aka Big Boss), as he puts together the elite Foxhound unit made famous in earlier Metal Gear titles, and is instigating a bloody revolt with his treacherous Fox unit.

Heralding the return of many notable characters from the Metal Gear series, Portable Ops acts as the climax to a major portion of the ongoing Metal Gear timeline, as players participate in the events that directly lead into later games in the series, including the great tragedy that determines Big Boss' future path

This game introduces a new team-building dimension to the action, that allows you to capture and recruit characters as you progress through the levels. Once caught and deprogrammed, you can assign them to different units that will perform different functions, such as healing team-mates, gathering intelligence and creating new items. Each character is rated on a series of attributes, giving a wide variety in building the ideal squad and creating different teams that are best suited to different types of combat situations.

The European version of the game offers an additional 12 characters than were available on the Japanese and US editions. It also features support for massive online battles in ten areas specifically designed for multiplayer encounters - two more than the Japanese and US version of the game - letting up to six players take their custom squads online and battle in stealthy encounters across several different modes of play. When in trouble you have the option of surrendering or risk permanently losing one of your comrades.

The only complaint I had about this title was the fact that the camera angles are a bit of a nightmare at times. Having to fumble your way towards the directional buttons in order to survey your environment can be a little distracting when you are trying to line up an enemy in your sights. Otherwise, this is one great PSP game that adds a lot to the Metal Gear universe.
