Sony Classical release of The Emoji Movie soundtrack with the music of Patrick Doyle. The film unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favourite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever...

Patrick Doyle's score for The Emoji Movie relies on a couple of prominent themes, which would have been fine if it weren't for the fact that one of them pretty much recycles his music from Eragon. This is probably most evident on 'Cloud and Confessions'.

Over the course of this score's 28 tracks (1 hr, 02 min, 25 sec) there's plenty of diversity - from electric guitar chase music of 'Mehs and Bots' to the mellow 'Seas and Whale Songs'. That's the one aspect you can't fault here, Doyle turns in a lot of interesting segments of music. This means you can listen to the album for quite some time, still finding subtle little themes that you may have missed in previous listens.

While, on balance, I enjoyed this score, it's probably not one (unlike Eragon) that I'll be digging out in the future to listen to again.
